Day 17 Meteor Crater-Flagstaff-Williams-Seligman

This morning, I visited Meteor Crater, located just outside Winslow, Arizona. Check out the pictures—it’s fascinating to learn that NASA astronauts trained in the crater between 1964 and 1972 to prepare for the Apollo missions to the Moon. From there, I headed to Flagstaff. Downtown Flagstaff sits right along historic Route 66, so I spent some time walking around and exploring the area. I eventually stopped for lunch at MartAnne’s Burrito Palace, a local favorite that I heard was some of the best Mexican food in town. Continuing down the road, I came across the charming little town of Williams. One of its biggest attractions is the Grand Canyon Railway, which offers vintage train rides to the Grand Canyon in beautifully restored 1880s coaches. If you stay in Williams into the evening, there’s plenty to see and do. At the visitor center, I overheard a woman telling some visitors from another country that at 7:00 p.m., just three blocks away, cowboys reenact an old-fashioned gunfight—and they do it every night! Unfortunately, I couldn’t stick around to see it, so I continued on to Seligman. Seligman is another classic Route 66 town, and I had to stop and check out the famous Roadkill Cafe. Their slogan says it all: “You Kill It, We Grill It.” The menu features items with names like No Luck Buck, Awesome Possum, and Bad Break Steaks Elk. Fortunately, I was still full from lunch! I also visited a museum featuring some of the automobiles that inspired the movie Cars before continuing on to Kingman, where I’ll be spending the night. Another great day exploring historic Route 66 and some of Arizona’s most interesting roadside attractions!
